I can be a very impatient person! A lot of people are like that, especially when it comes to healing. Todays generation is the “Now” generation! Everything moves so much quicker than it ever did. Technology has everyone wanting things in a blink of an eye. Most of the time you can get things quickly, but the way the body heals is a lot different. Sure there are things you can do to speed up the process, but healing is something that needs to be given proper time.
Everybody heals differently! Just because you have the same injury as someone else doesn’t mean you will have the same recovery time. Certain injuries have a specific time period of healing, but there are a lot of factors that go into this. Age is a big one! The older you get, the slower you heal. It’s just a fact! Gender also plays a role as well. The type of person you are believe it or not plays a role too! If you are the type of person that is very motivated, wants to go the extra mile, high energy, positive
attitude, chances are you are going to heal a bit faster. On the other hand, if you are lazy, not wanting to do things on your own or unwilling to have an open mind about your program, your healing time might be effected!
I always have a few people with the same problem in my clinic. Whether it’s a total knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, lower back pain…whatever. And I always get the question…how long have they been here and why are they doing so much better than me? Patients are always looking at eachother wondering if they are on track in their rehab process. Part of my job is to educate them on their problem, what we need to do to fix it and how we are going to manage it. I never compare anyone in my clinic. I will tell them everybody heals differently. Patients shouldn’t compare themselves to each other either. You can’t even compare your right from your left in my opinion! If you tore your rotator cuff on your right shoulder, and 2 years later tore your left, you can’t think that it will heal or respond the same.
So, the next time you have an injury, and your feeling that you want it to be over now, remember that healing takes time! Remember that it’s something that you can’t rush and that everybody responds differently!
